Pure Onyx Movement is a dance ensemble created by three queens, using breath, the art of bellydance and movement of life to show the world how beautiful and rich our black history is. Join us on our maiden voyage...we hope you enjoy the ride.

Belly dancing is an art form that embraces all woman and teaches you to revere the curvy female contour, something that society has told us was too much to love. Abundance in flesh is considered a bonus and belly dancers of all sizes and ages discover and enjoy confidence in displaying their shape. Women dancing together create an atmosphere of empowerment and trust.

Thus, we introduce to you:  Pure Onyx Movement!

Pure Onyx Movement! uses the art of belly dance for inner womb healing, and as a way to pay homage to our ancestors.  Belly dance or raqs sharqi or the dance of the east, dates back more than 6000 years.  Rooted in Africa, Bellydance is one the original art forms of dance.  And it is greatly believed that current and other cultures’ traditional dances have been also derived from dances from Africa.Belly dancing evolved from ancient spiritual movements that honored fertility.   As the survival of our species relied on our success in reproducing, our ancestors devised rituals such as the belly dance to gain favors from the fertility goddess. The earthy, sensual movements are said to unite the body with the spirit of the Earth.  Belly dance was also used in the temples of ancient Egypt in various rituals. The people used dance to celebrate festivals, harvests, warriors, love, marriage, life, death, births and just danced for fun.  The greatest misconception about belly dance is that it is intended to entertain men. Because segregation of the sexes was common in the part of the world that produced belly dancing, men often were not allowed to be present.  It wasn’t until the 19th century that belly dance became a public dance.

Pure Onyx Movement honors our ancestors by dancing the dance that celebrates the magic, mysteries and abilities of a woman.  Being a woman means being able to create and carry life, what better way to pay homage than to honor mother earth.  And like our ancestors we dance with bare feet to connect to the ground to signify the ancient physical connection between the dancer, the music and Mother Earth. Through belly dance we not only honor life but we weave a tapestry of honors for the stages of life. .  We the members of Pure Onyx Movement! dance the dances of all those who've danced before us.
